Dare 2 Dream. A Community Project. Send 40 kids to KidZania. By the RE:ED Project.

SMK Tengku Idris Shah is located in Kapar, Selangor. It is a large school, with approximately 2,300 students.

Many students come from poor backgrounds - many are illiterate and innumerate. Basic literacy test for Bahasa Malaysia done by the State Education Department of Selangor (JPS), administered last year revealed that 198 students out of approximately 1,050 students in the afternoon session of the school were illiterate. This means that many students lack the ability and skills to function in a normal classroom. These students are increasingly being left further behind in school each year and many don't pick up these basic skills even after they have completed formal education, locking them into low income jobs, thus perpetuating the vicious cycle of poverty and illiteracy that our students are unfortunately caught in.

The Problem

1. Many students entering the school are 3 to 6 years behind; some begin their secondary school years unable to read and write.

2. Students often get frustrated due to the lack of comprehension, as teachers are teaching at a much higher level than they can cope with.

3. The range of students' abilities in each classroom is so wide that to individualize learning to each student's current level would be an overwhelming task, given the limited amount of time we have in the classroom with the students.

However, it does not mean that they do not have ambitions and dream for their future. Hence, this year we plan to bring those underprivileged students to KidZania! KidZania is a unique, interactive entertainment and educational centre for children aged 4-17 to play, explore and learn about the adult world in a city built entirely for kids. The ultimate role playing environment, KidZania offers kids more than 90 different role-playing activities, like being a doctor, a chef, or an actress. Real-life simulation is presented to the children so that they will experience the challenges of the position, just as those faced by the adults in the job. Children can expect to put out a fire should they wish to be a fireman, perform surgery on a patient if they desire to be a surgeon or pilot an airplane if flying is what they want. Hence, our goal this year is to help underprivileged school children realize their potential. We believe that through the role playing they are going to experience in KidZania, it will motivate them to be a better student in order to pursue their dreams.

The money raised will be put to good use by paying for the entrance tickets and also the transportation fees for the students selected. There will be total 40 students to be selected according to their attendance and performance in school. The KidZania trip will be held in November 2014. We hope that we will be able to reach out to more students in this school in the future.

The RE:ED t-shirt for pitchers that pitch $20 or more!

We would encourage you to connect your Facebook with pitchIN before you pitch to the project. If not, your pitch will be identified as "anonymous" in the Project Page. However, if you choose to pitch anonymously, pitchIN would still have your information. We think it would be just awesome if we can see and identify our supporters in the wall of pitchers.

Also, because this project is a Community project, your pitch will be charged instantly.

A pitcher/pledger does not need a PayPal account to pitch or pledge. What he/she needs is a credit card (Mastercard/Visa) or a debit card.

However, if you are not comfortable doing an online pitch/pledge - you can transfer the money directly to the pitchIN account as follows:

Maybank 564892100684

WATCHTOWER AND FRIENDS SDN BHD is the company that owns and runs pitchIN.

However, the person must send pitchIN the proof of transfer by attaching the receipt to the email address: with the Subject Heading: RE:ED. Upon receiving that, the folks at pitchIN can then quickly update the project page.

Thank you again and we do hope you will support the project!

Additional Information

I'm Yih Ling, a student studying Psychology in HELP University. I'm also Teach for Malaysia's Campus Leader in my university.

It all began with a desire to make a change in the lives of the less fortunate. One of the prevailing issues evident in Malaysia is the poverty-stricken communities and the children who come from these communities. Due to their financial circumstances, living conditions are hard and adults have a hard time keeping their families together. As such, many of these children have difficulty in keeping up with their peers. Many of them are actually lagging behind their level. So, 'The RE:ED Project' was set up to call in willing volunteers to help give these children a second chance at school. Extra classes have been conducted for these students for a year now.

The entire project is run by volunteers who are mostly university students - from managing the Facebook and Twitter accounts, to maintaining and updating our blog, to teaching the children at the school. Though we are students ourselves, we want to see this project grow and reach out to more of these needy children and to help them.
