Project Summary

What is DTOLJ Education Fund initiative?
The DTOLJ Education Fund initiative is an effort launched by the family of late YAM Datuk Seri Senator Temenggong Oyong Paul Lawai Jau (DTOLJ). The initiative, in partnership with pitchIN has an initial target to raise RM130,000 by way of rewarding pledges with items crafted or performed by the Kenyah and Kayan folks in Sarawak. The profits will go towards the setting up of an education fund for the children of the community.
The foundation or education fund that will ultimately be set up will be called DTOLJ Foundation, subject to authority approval. We believe with the initial amount raised, the fund can be established within a time frame of six to 12 months with a paid up capital of at least RM100,000 (There is no requirement of a minimum paid up capital under the Labuan Foundation Act currently).

How long is the campaign?
The campaign with pitchIn will last for three months up till September 1, 2015. We hope to do a soft launch of the education fund on Malaysia Day itself on September 16, 2015. Fundraising initiatives will continue to grow the fund as a sustainable rate to support the cause.
Why the initiative?
The Kenyah and Kayan community of more than 60,000 people currently does not have an education fund of its own. The DTOLJ Education Fund aims to give assistance to children attending school or tertiary education as well as to children with special needs such as Autism and Autism Spectrum Disorder related therapies.
Furthermore, since the DTOLJ initiative targets bulk orders from corporates/organizations and the masses, it instantly create jobs for the ladies from the Kenyah and Kayan community who earn less than RM500 a month.
For instance, to make 500 lanyards , we will hire between 15 and 20 ladies from the community to complete the product within a month. We, the TOLJ Team, are already training women who are willing to make crafts on a part time basis.
Apart from online fundraising, how else will we raise fund? What are publicity involved?
Using Malaysia Day as the platform, we have approached public listed companies and embassies for this initiative. We will engage our media friends and will be participating in the weekend Baazar at THE CURVE to showcase this project in September. In progress is also a YOUtube clip on the initiative. We will hold a press conference on June 16 at pitchIN headquarters to kick off this initiative.
Why RM130,000?
The fund targeted of RM130,000 will include the expenses of setting up the education fund that should not be more than RM30,000. Of the amount, it is estimated that RM11,000 or USD3000 will be needed to defray expenses of setting up an education fund under the Labuan Foundation Act. pitchIN will get a minimal fee ie 3.5% of total amount raised.Other expenses relate to the labour and material costs of crafts, accommodation and logistics of cultural performers, as well as setting up of booth in THE CURVE for the soft launch of the education fund in conjunction of Malaysia Day on Sept 16. As mentioned earlier, the target is to launch a fund with at least RM100,000 paid up capital.
